Used Book Sale

The Global Action Committee will be hosting Sunnybrae’s first ever USED BOOK SALE during the week of Feb. 21 – 24 to raise funds for “Free the Children”.  This is how you can help.  We are asking for families to donate gently used children’s picture and chapter books.  Simply bring in the books to school on Tuesday and Wednesday (21th – 22rd).

These books will be sold on Thursday and Friday (soft copies for 25 cents and hard copies for 50 cents).  What a great way to re-circulate the books your children are finished with, to get new reading materials and to support people in other parts of the world.  Thanks for your help!

2nd Annual Family Fun Fitness and Nutrition Night at Sunnybrae PS

Grade 5 Students and Families – A Reminder to Register……

Students in grade 5 attending Sunnybrae PS and their immediate families are invited to participate in a Family Fun Fitness and Nutrition Night at Sunnybrae PS on Wednesday, February 29th from 6:40pm to 8pm in the gymnasium. Parents must accompany their children for the entire duration – no drop off and pick-up.  Parents will be asked to sign-in upon arrival.

All participants (students and adults) are asked to come prepared to ‘be active’ which require a pair of clean-soled running shoes. Activities will consist of a warm-up, cooperative games, MASSIVE BEACH VOLLEYBALL, and a group photograph. Also, please indicate what type of lunch your son or daughter would like to prepare for the next school day!

Student Safety To/ From School:

Our School Council has been working with the Town of Innisfil and the County of Simcoe to improve the safety of students who walk to/from school. We are asking the County of Simcoe to make the section of highway between Lynn Ave. and Victoria Street a Community Safety Zone. This would mean that drivers who are stopped for traffic violations during school hours will receive double the fine. Through Council’s previous efforts the town plans to build a sidewalk between the school and Yonge Street so that students do not have to walk along the side of the road. This is scheduled to happen in 2013. We are also hoping that one side of Lynn Ave. behind the school will be made a No Parking area during school hours so that students can walk safely along one side of the street.

Our School Council had our School Board Trustee, Donna Armstrong, attend the December meeting and the Mayor of Innisfil, Barb Baguley attended the meeting on February 6th. During this week’s meeting some concerns were raised by the town:

  1. Parents pulling away from the school with their child (ren) while they were talking on their cell phone.
  2. Parents parking on the side of Sunnybrae that is posted “No Parking” so that students can walk down one side of the street and buses can get down the street.
  3. If was suggested that parents could park on Nelson Street and either walk with their children or have their children walk the rest of the way to/from school.

Our School Council will continue to work toward making the route that students take to/from school safer. Please help our School Council by respecting the highway traffic laws when you are in our School Community.

Thank you for your support!

Fifth Disease

We have had a case of Fifth Disease reported today at Sunnybrae.

Fifth disease is an infection of the respiratory system. It is caused by a virus called parvovirus B19. The illness is often very mild. Sometimes, the child may not even feel sick. Adults usually get a more severe case, with fever and painful joints. At least 50 percent of adults have had fifth disease in childhood and will not get it again if exposed to a child with the infection. Outbreaks of fifth disease can occur in school-age children. It is an illness that starts with: a red rash on cheeks which looks like a slap. (Often referred to as “slap-cheek syndrome”.) 1 – 4 days later, a red lace-like rash appears, first on the arms, then on the rest of the body. The rash comes and goes for 1 week. Some children don’t become ill, some may develop a mild fever.

A person is most contagious before the rash appears. It spreads the same way as a cold virus. Good hygiene, including frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when sneezing and not sharing utensils etc. is advised.

Special concerns about fifth disease:

If you are pregnant and you have been in contact with someone with fifth disease, you should contact your doctor immediately. There is a risk to the fetus for developing anemia. The health unit also advises that if you have concerns or questions you call the Mother Risk Line (Hospital for Sick Kids) 416-813-6780. The infection is also more serious for children with chronic anemia and HIV.

Individuals should contact their physicians for additional information and/or diagnosis.

Sincerely,

T. Dorsey,

Principal

Sunnybrae News: By Caprice and Jessica

On Thursday December 8th Tyrone Henry and the Rick Hansen Relay came to Sunnybrae.  To start off, everyone in the school performed the spirit dance in front of Tyrone and the Rick Hansen committee, and we ended the dance with a “Hip! Hip! Hooray!”

As a surprise the Rick Hansen committee taught us a dance along with the song “Firework”.  It was a great experience.  I hope that the Rick Hansen committee will always remember our Power of One dance.  Great job Sunnybrae!  Keep up the good work!

Remember the Power of One can start with only one, that’s what Rick Hansen believes and you should believe it too!  Go Bulldogs!

On Thursday December 8th the Rick Hansen Relay came to Sunnybrae Public School.  They had a blue van.  Tyrone Henry wore a special medal.  It was the 25th Anniversary.  We did the spirit dance and it was fun.  The school was great in front of the Rick Hansen group.  They said that we were they best school they had seen and that they liked the song.

Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay Dances with Sunnybrae PS!

I was one of the Rick Hansen Team members that was at your school yesterday when the Relay convoy arrived.  I was so impressed with the faculty, students and the parents from your school that I just had to send you a quick note to tell you that your engagement with us was fabulous.  We’ve seen a lot of schools since we left Cape Spear, Newfoundland last August; but yours by far was the most impressive.  The level of enthusiasm in everyone from teachers to students to their parents was over the top.  I thoroughly enjoyed the dance that your students performed and I loved the way they responded to our Fireworks dance.  I wish we could have stayed longer at the school; but the brief time we were there will be one of the highlights of my entire Relay tour across the country.

Thank you so much for organizing this event.  Outstanding!

Best regards,   Mike

The Rick Hansen Tour

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Mr. Dunkley has arranged for the Rick Hansen Tour to make a 5 minute stop in front of our school on Thursday, December 8th. The tour will be at the front of the school at about 3:20p.m. Since it is at the end of the day we have arranged for the busses to leave the school no later than 3:50p.m. Sunnybrae Ave. will be blocked off for the time that the Tour is at the school so parents who pick up their children at the front of the school will either have to arrive early or wait until the police have opened up the road again. Once the Rick Hansen Tour is at the school, traffic will not be able to drive on Sunnybrae Ave. Our whole student body will be in front of the school to meet the tour members and to perform our school dance.

Students will go then go back into the school for a regular dismissal. Please do not plan to take your child (ren) from the front of the school as we will need to account for everyone and it will be a busy time. Walkers and bussed students will be dismissed together from their classrooms so that busses can leave by about 3:50p.m.

Please understand that students will be dismissed from 10- 20 minutes after the regular school day ends so they will arrive home later.

If you are interested in attending the event please come early or park on Glenn Ave. so that you do not get caught in traffic.

This is a “Once in a lifetime” event and we are very excited to be part of it.

Thank you for your support.

Mr. Dorsey
