Our School Council has been working with the Town of Innisfil and the County of Simcoe to improve the safety of students who walk to/from school. We are asking the County of Simcoe to make the section of highway between Lynn Ave. and Victoria Street a Community Safety Zone. This would mean that drivers who are stopped for traffic violations during school hours will receive double the fine. Through Council’s previous efforts the town plans to build a sidewalk between the school and Yonge Street so that students do not have to walk along the side of the road. This is scheduled to happen in 2013. We are also hoping that one side of Lynn Ave. behind the school will be made a No Parking area during school hours so that students can walk safely along one side of the street.

Our School Council had our School Board Trustee, Donna Armstrong, attend the December meeting and the Mayor of Innisfil, Barb Baguley attended the meeting on February 6th. During this week’s meeting some concerns were raised by the town:

  1. Parents pulling away from the school with their child (ren) while they were talking on their cell phone.
  2. Parents parking on the side of Sunnybrae that is posted “No Parking” so that students can walk down one side of the street and buses can get down the street.
  3. If was suggested that parents could park on Nelson Street and either walk with their children or have their children walk the rest of the way to/from school.

Our School Council will continue to work toward making the route that students take to/from school safer. Please help our School Council by respecting the highway traffic laws when you are in our School Community.

Thank you for your support!
